When Marichuy was born, her mother, believing she was on the verge of death, handed her over to a priest, who took her to an orphanage. At the age of fourteen, Marichuy ran away from the institution and began wandering from place to place, scraping together a living however she could. Years later, she was attacked by a drunkard; the incident left her harboring resentment toward men and plagued by harrowing nightmares.

Marichuy is a cheerful, hard-working young woman who lives in a poor neighborhood of the city and harbors a terrible secret. Juan Miguel lives in an unhappy marriage, driven only by the love of his young daughter.
Juan Miguel is impressed by Marichuy's beauty. Viviana feels bored with her marriage to Juan Miguel. Marichuy suffers when she remembers her life of deprivation, while Cecilia regrets abandoning her daughter.
Isabela tricks Cecilia into believing that Estefanía is the daughter she abandoned. Marichuy confesses to Father Anselmo that a man abused her. Juan Miguel expresses to Patricio his interest in helping Marichuy.
Cecilia confesses the truth to Patricio about the daughter she abandoned, and they agree to take Estefanía in. Viviana calls Juan Miguel's house looking for Onelia. Marichuy steals milk from the neighborhood to help the children at the orphanage.
