Follow the adventures and misadventures of Penny, a 14-year-old African American girl who's doing her best to navigate through the early years of teen-dom. Penny's every encounter inevitably spirals into bigger than life situations filled with hi-jinks, hilarity and heart. Her quest to balance her home, school and social lives are further complicated by friends like the sassy Dijonay, Penny's nemesis LaCienega Boulevardez, her loving, if not over-protective parents and her hip-to-the-groove-granny, Suga Mama.
Penny thinks she's made the cheerleading squad, but arch rival LaCienega Boulevardez shows up and ruins everything, so Penny enlists the thuggish Gross sisters to help--but they make matters worse.
Penny breaks her father's no-dating rule when she goes to the amusement park and pairs up with a boy named Carlos. Elsewhere, her parents go on a double date to a day spa.
Penny's grades fall victim to a long-time grudge held between her teacher Ms. Dinkins and Suga Mama; Oscar and Trudy enroll the twins in a private preschool.
Penny is entrusted with her very own credit card, which she plans on using responsibly, but it seems to have a mind of its own. Oscar, meanwhile, nearly spends his family out of house and home in his attempt to catch a mouse.
